Understanding the Adoption Process: What to Expect Every Step of the Way

If you’re pregnant and thinking of placing your baby for adoption, you’re not alone, and you don’t have to face this decision without support. Considering adoption is a courageous and loving choice. Understanding how the adoption process works can help you feel more in control and at peace.

Exploring Your Options

The first step is simply thinking it through. Adoption is just one of several paths available during an unexpected pregnancy. You have time to:

  • Speak with a counselor or social worker
  • Talk to family or trusted friends
  • Reflect on what’s best for you and your baby’s future

Contacting an Adoption Professional

Once you consider adoption, the next step is to connect with a licensed adoption agency like Colorado Christian Services. With over 61 years of experience, Colorado Christian Services (CCS) provides confidential and free support for birth mothers. We are here to answer your questions, explore your options, and support you, without any pressure if you decide to give your child up for adoption.

Services for birthmothers are free and can include:

  • Free, confidential counseling
  • Help creating your adoption plan
  • Legal guidance at no cost to you
  • Financial and emotional support during pregnancy
  • Post-placement support for as long as you want it

Creating an Adoption Plan

You’re in charge of your adoption plan. That means you get to decide:

Who the adoptive parents are (you can review profiles and learn more about them)?

The type of adoption you want:

  • Open (ongoing contact)
  • Semi-open (limited or mediated contact)
  • Closed (no contact)

What your hospital and delivery experience will look like?

What kind of relationship you hope to have after placement?

Matching with an Adoptive Family

Once your adoption plan is in place, CCS will help match you with adoptive parents who align with your wishes.

You will get to:

  • Read through the adoptive family profiles
  • Ask questions
  • Choose who feels right for your baby

Delivery and Placement

Your hospital plan will guide the experience when it’s time to deliver. You will decide:

  • Who’s in the room
  • Whether you want time alone with your baby
  • When and how the placement will happen

After delivery and a waiting period, you’ll legally sign adoption consent forms. No one can force or rush you. You can change your mind at any point until a judge has signed the final orders.

Life After Placement

After the adoption is finalized, your journey continues, and you are never alone.

You may experience a mix of emotions: grief, peace, love, sadness, relief, or all of the above. This is normal. Many birth mothers find healing through:

  • Post-placement counseling
  • Support groups
  • Maintaining a relationship with the adoptive family

You Are Not Giving Up

To be clear: You are not “giving up” your baby. You are making a thoughtful, loving decision to give them a life you may not feel ready to provide.
