What Is Open Adoption and How Does It Work

Are you unexpectedly pregnant and considering open adoption? This journey can feel overwhelming and emotional, but you don’t have to walk alone.

For more than 62 years, Colorado Christian Services (CCS) has walked alongside women as they navigate the adoption journey with care and compassion. If you’re considering adoption and wondering whether an open adoption might be the right choice, here are a few important things to know before making your decision.

Understanding Open Adoption

Open adoption is a loving option that allows birthmothers to choose adoption while still maintaining a connection with their child and the adoptive family.

You are in Control

One of the most important aspects of open adoption is that you are in control. You can choose the adoptive family and decide the level of openness that feels right.

Adoption agencies like Colorado Christian Services help you explore your options without pressure. We’ll connect you with families ready to embrace openness and respect your role in your child’s life. As you begin this unique relationship, you can ask questions, get to know the family, and build trust.

A Plan That Fits You

No two stories are the same, and your adoption journey shouldn’t be either. With a caring adoption professional by your side, you’ll create a plan that reflects your wishes, values, and comfort level.

Support to Count On

From options counseling to practical resources, Colorado Christian Services (CCS) is here to walk with you every step of the way.

What does the Process Look Like?

  1. Start by talking with a trusted adoption professional. Free counseling before, during, and after birth.
  2. Together, you’ll explore your options—open, semi-open, or closed adoption—and create a personalized plan that works for you.
  3. You’ll get to learn about waiting adoptive families who have been carefully screened and approved. You decide who feels right for your child.
  4. You can change your mind any time before the signed legal paperwork is filed in court (under Colorado law)

Is Open Adoption Right for You?

Every woman’s situation is different; only you can decide what’s best for you and your baby. But if you’re looking for a choice that allows love, connection, and peace of mind, open adoption is worth exploring.

Adoption Is Not “Giving Up”

Adoption is a brave and loving choice. You’re putting your child first, even when it’s hard. At CCS, we don’t pressure you. Talking to us is free and private. Reaching out means you’re exploring your options—it doesn’t mean you’ve made a final decision.
