Open adoption in Colorado

Navigating openness

When choosing adoption in Colorado, it’s important to know that our state does not have any laws that legally bind adoptive parents to have a continued relationship with a birth family. Therefore, adoptive families need to morally abide by what they promised the birth parents during the adoption process.

We tell all of the adoptive families that we work with that you should never over-promise to a birth parent. Prior to being matched, an adoptive family should sit down and have a conversation (or two, or three!) about what level of openness you would be comfortable having with the birth parent or birth family. Then, once you’ve decided what you’re comfortable with, you should be open and honest with the birth parents.

Some birth parents desire openness to some degree, but that openness is different for every case. However, one thing is for certain – openness is in the best interest of the child. It allows them better grapple with the tough questions about being adopted and lets them rest assured that their birth mother made that tough decision out of love.
